An expanding transport network strengthens Azerbaijan`s role

The South Caucasus is becoming an increasingly important transit region, with the analysis arguing that Azerbaijan holds a clear advantage through its operational East-West and North-South corridors. In 2025, cargo volumes reached 16.91 million tons on the East-West route and 9.29 million tons on the North-South Corridor, while the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway expanded its annual capacity from 1 million to 5 million tons.

The analysis says Armenia's "Crossroads of Peace" initiative faces challenges including limited railway infrastructure, difficult terrain, and reliance on external financing. It concludes that many of Armenia's proposed routes still depend on cooperation with Azerbaijan, whose expanding transport network is expected to further strengthen its position as the region's main transit hub.
